ROAR presents: ‘Utopia on the Horizon’

In May 2011, hundreds of thousands of Greeks swarmed into Syntagma Square. In a matter of days, a protest camp was set up – organized on the principles of direct democracy, leaderless self-management and mutual aid – providing a glimpse of utopia in the midst of a devastating financial, political and social crisis. On June 28-29, during a Parliamentary vote on further austerity measures, the state finally responded with brutal force, eventually evicting the protesters from the square and crushing the radical potential of their social experiment.

The Greek antifascist volunteers in the Spanish Civil War

On July 17 1936 a group of fascist officers in Spanish Morocco, led by Colonel Seguin, rebelled and overthrew the legitimate democratic authorities which had been elected in February of the same year. This was the beginning of the fascist coup, which spread like lightning in the country, and caused the massacre of the Spanish people for nearly three years.

O Κορνήλιος Καστοριάδης γεννήθηκε το 1922 στην Κωνσταντινούπολη και υπήρξε ένας φιλόσοφος που το έργο του μέσα από την διεπιστημονικότητα και την πολυεδρικότητα του κατάφερε να είναι οικουμενικό. Η συμμετοχή του σε ποικίλες πολιτικές και φιλοσοφικές συγκρούσεις αλλά και η σύζευξη γνωστικών πεδίων όπως της φιλοσοφίας, της πολιτικής, της ψυχανάλυσης, της οικονομίας, της βιολογίας τον καθιστούν έναν από τους σημαντικότερους φιλοσόφους του 20ου αιώνα. Έφυγε από τη ζωή, σαν σήμερα, 26 Δεκεμβρίου του 1997…
