Academics from Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain will discuss the economic, political and humanitarian crisis austerity has created in South Europe. But PIGS can fly. The widespread protests of 2011 have started again in Spain, Portugal and Italy while in Greece the new austerity has brought the government close to collapse. Is austerity or resistance the future of Europe?
Feeling very upset about what is going on in Spain I asked my colleague Virginia, a member of the London Assembly of the Indignados or 15M movement, to write something about it. This blog has been written by Isaac Montero and Virginia López Calvo, both members of the London Assembly of the Indignados or 15M movement.
Students from London Metropolitan University protested yesterday in favour of full amnesty for international students and against the marketisation of higher education, the encroachment of for-profit private providers, against threatened job cuts and also demanded the immediate scraping of management’s shared-service (outsourcing and privatisation by the backdoor) initiative.
Let us create, then, our own history, revolting against the totalitarianism of cynicism and spectacle, against the oligarchy of wealth. It’s time to hold peaceful but decisive actions across Europe. The Europe of people, not of the oligarchs and technocrats, is possible if we try together and coordinated. In the squares and streets real democracy, human creation, and communication can be reborn. Without leaders and mentors. Let’s become an embrace, which raises its fist. Let’s not live as slaves.
